Policies
Inclement Weather Policy
- The University Library will adhere to the
University of Virginia Inclement Weather/Emergencies Policy found at: http://www.hrs.virginia.edu/policies/emprel/classified/inclewthr.html.
The University policy defines entire shift modifications, partial shift modifications,
nonessential employees, essential employees and grace periods due to transportation
difficulties. The policy includes a chart describing circumstances such as shift
modifications and the responsibilities of essential and non-essential employees.
- During fall, spring, and summer sessions, when students are in residence
and an announcement is made that nonessential personnel should not report to work,
essential employees should report to work, and the libraries
will open for their regular schedules (typically
8:00 a.m.). During the intersessions between fall, spring, and summer sessions,
when students are not in residence and the announcement is that nonessential personnel
should not report to work, essential employees should report, and the libraries
will open as close to their regular opening time as possible (typically 8:00 a.m.)
but no later than 10:00.
On days when the University is closed and only "snow essential" personnel must
report, the University Librarian will decide if the Library will open. The announcement
will be made on the snow information lines by 6:00 a.m.:
924-SNOW, or 243-SNOW.
Employees should call one of these numbers to find out if the University and the
Library will be open or closed.
- The University Librarian will also make decisions regarding early closing
because of the weather.
- Department Heads and supervisors will inform essential employees in advance
and in writing that they will be required to work during authorized shift modifications.
Normally this will take place at the time of employment or at the beginning of
the inclement weather season. Occasionally nonessential employees may be deemed
essential or vice versa, depending on the needs of the department.
- Department Heads are also responsible for letting their Associate University Librarian (AUL) or the Deputy Librarian know who is designated as "essential" for their area.
- Department heads and supervisors should inform the Director of Library Human
Resources if there are changes in essential personnel.
