Library Planning

WHAT WE WILL DO TODAY FOR THE LIBRARY OF TOMORROW:

Planning Day 2004 Progress Report

Results of Planning Day 2003

The "Library of Tomorrow" began as an effort to shape a model library for the 21st century that will make all forms of information easily accessible to our users. While we focused our initial efforts on digital library activities, the Library of Tomorrow (LofT) is an all-inclusive, evolutionary process. LofT is shaped by the vision and guiding principles of the Library, and we will use the concept to refer to the Library's goals each year.

Next Steps Toward the Library of Tomorrow:

1. Increase Diversity

  • Increase the diversity of our workforce to reflect the diversity of our users.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate one or two strategies to recruit members of under-represented groups into librarianship.

2. Improve internal communication

  • Communicate how each department contributes to and participates in library service delivery.
  • Facilitate collaboration among departments in the delivery of library services.

3. Create physical spaces for programs and services

  • Complete planning and develop timelines and resource needs for Harrison, Alderman, and Clemons.
  • Develop interim plan for storage of library materials until Ivy Stacks II is completed.

4. Reconsider 2001 LofT report

5. Create easy access to collections and services

  • Define a suite of digital research and instructional services that offer "one-stop shopping" and develop a plan/timeline for implementing them.
  • Implement new functionality for online access such as federated searching , open URL , and/or content management .
  • Prepare and deliver high impact content (including purchased, licensed, and locally created) via an integrated environment.

We were guided in our thinking by considering things that:

  • have a strong, positive impact on users.
  • are collaborative (needs contributions from different departments).
  • support our vision and guiding principles for the Library.
  • are scalable and sustainable in the future.
  • are doable within the next one or two years.
